Civic Centre

Brescia, Italy

The Brief: Design the plans for a ‘missing building’ in the old quarter of Brescia.

The Challenge: Ensure it fits in with both the old buildings either side of it, plus the opulent city hall nearby.

The Project: A wide, open gap had been sitting in an old Italian neighbourhood since WWII. It was surrounded by ageing, brick buildings with distinct red tiled roofs and just round the corner from the marble city hall. Our job was to create public spaces architecture plans for a building that would connect the hall with the nearby apartments and shops.

As a salute to the grand city hall, the public space’s architecture plans included Italian, white marble for the exterior walls. We put facades on the outside designed as windows, while the real windows look as though they are cutting into the exterior. To bridge the marble civic centre with the neighbouring residences, we designed the building in the same shape as the houses, just on a grander scale. Inside, we added facilities and rooms for university students including a library, bar and bookshop.

The result is a public space’s architecture plans that were well-received by the local residents and university students alike.
