Legnano Library

Legnano, Italy

The Brief: Design the plans for a creative new town library in a city park.

The Challenge: Create a building large enough for thousands of books but without it being intrusive.

The Project: Legnano city council brought us on board to create the public library architecture plans for a new building. There were a few important factors at play; the library had to be welcoming, accommodate thousands of books but not obstruct views of the park.

What better way to house so many books than to replicate the world’s largest mammal - a whale semi-submerged in the sea. Only its head and tail are above the ‘water’, and these are the two buildings visible above ground. Underground, however, is the beating heart of the whale and the main hall, which connects the two buildings. Within the public library architecture design, the reading rooms are located on four floors in the tail, while people enter via the whale’s open mouth.

The result is a design that has far more space than meets the eye and represents nature in every sense of the word. Thepublic library architecture plans became a talking point with its modern style, design and sleek lines.
