House SG

Brescia, Italy

The Brief: Create an interior house design with a nod towards the building’s industrial past, and a focus on recycled materials.

The Challenge: Design terrace steps that can be lifted up with just one finger and create bespoke furniture.

The Project: Located in a former factory, this spacious 230sqm apartment has plenty of living space split over two floors. Home to a family of four – two adults and two children – it had to have an interior house design that would suit both the adults and youngsters alike. The family were keen to reflect the industrial heritage of the building and use recycled materials wherever possible, and natural materials where not.

One main feature that instantly stands out in the interior house design are the oak floorboards which were upcycled from 100-year-old wine barrels and used throughout the apartment. In the master bedroom we created a screen made from recycled burnt wooden planks to create a walk-in wardrobe separate to the sleeping area. Many other pieces of furniture were recycled and redesigned including an old portmanteau used for storage and a bookshelf made from wooden boxes, while the rest we tailor made including the bed in the main bedroom and the white bookshelf above it.

We created a dedicated area on the second floor of the interior house design for the children to study, play and relax. Next to this is a large 100sqm outdoor terrace which connects to the apartment via retractable steps. These are designed to be lifted up with just one finger and provide room below for an outdoor dining area.

For the industrial look, we used iron staircases and rafters while several of the walls show the painted bricks.

The result is an interior house design that retains its industrial legacy while being practical and comfortable.
